War memorial commemorating the Gallipoli campaign in 1915
Today is ANZAC Day and it is perhaps more poignant than ever with it being the centenary of the landings at Gallipoli. Whilst there are many thousands of war memorials up and down the country, there aren’t too many which commemorate this episode of the First World War.
Pictured here is one of them – the Collingwood Battalion Memorial at Collingwood Corner, Pimperne in Dorset. The Historic England record notes that the memorial “commemorates the officers and men of the Collingwood Battalion of the Royal Naval Division who died in action during the Third Battle of Krithia at Helles on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 4 June 1915 when the battalion was practically destroyed.” So while it is ANZAC Day, and so many Australian and New Zealand troops lost their lives in the ultimately doomed campaign, it should be remembered that troops from other countries also lost their lives.
